October is shaping up to be full of field trips! Avery, being a 5th grader now, has slowed down in the department

of school field trips but last week the entire 5th grade of Milam Elementary headed out for a day of learning about conservation at Praise Acres, which is in west Tupelo. It was a near perfect day - weatherwise - and the Soil and Conservation Department people had some fun things planned for the kids. We learned about fish, recycling, how important it is to NOT litter, and what animals are found along the Natchez Trace Parkway. The kids built a birdhouse, hiked along an "unnatural"

trail looking for things that didn't belong in nature, and learned that dirt is what's under your fingernails - not what you plant things in (that's soil!). We even saw a beaver lodge! We ate a picnic lunch and then saw (by chance!) a locust 'molting'. Avery had just learned about this in class at school so it was very cool to see this in real life! It was a very informative, fun day and this mommy liked spending the day with my 11 year old daughter who's not
too totally embarrassed to have her mom around (just yet!).
