On the first day of May this year, Gran fell and broke the femur of her left leg. She had surgery where a plate and many pins were put in, then stayed in the hospital for about a month. After coming home, she has pretty much been home bound because she couldn't walk and could put NO weight on that leg. She could get around her house in a wheelchair and has stayed by herself after the first week of being home, but I know she has been pretty stir-crazy. Today she got the OK from her doctor to put 100% weight on her leg. YEA!! That means she can walk - after almost 4 months. She will still need her walker for awhile, and will then go to a cane. Once she's totally healed, she will ditch the cane too.
I can't even begin to say how patient Mama (Gran) has been through all of this! She has done an amazing job of keeping her spirits up and somehow staying (at least a little bit) busy. She has had many, many friends visit and call and bring her things to help her out. I hope she realizes how truly blessed and loved she is. That has to be one big positive that has come from this. Losing weight has to be another positive! I don't know how much she has lost (close to 20 pounds? maybe more?) but she really looks good.
The next month or two will involve more physical therapy (3X a week), but at least she won't be stuck in her house anymore. She'll be strengthening that leg day by day and pretty soon she'll be good as new! We are so thankful for her and what she means to our family. She's definitely taught us a lesson in patience (something I need way more of sometimes!) and we are so glad she can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel -- and can finally get out of her house!! We love you very much, Gran and are so proud of you for persevering through this time. I will miss the do-rag look though!
